Top 10 foreign born players that chose to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria

Since the olden days till now, several players born to foreign parents and have chosen to wear the green and white of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

While Nigeria is the most populous African country and a beacon of Africa all over the world, some of our best players are foreign born and eligible to represent other countries..

Here we take a look at the top 10 foreign born players that chose the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

1. Leon Balogun

The German-born defender Balogun was born to a Nigerian-Yoruba father and a German mother. He started his career in Germany, He featured for Fortuna Dusseldorf and Mainz 05, before moving to Premier League side, Brighton and Hove Albion, on a free transfer. He later went on loan to Wigan after being unable get a starting shirt.

He made his debut for Nigeria in 2014, coming on as a replacement for Joseph Yobo in a game against Mexico. He has also been immense for Nigeria, forming what was known as “the oyinbo wall” with William Troost-Ekong which was a solid partnership.

So far, he has made more than 30 appearances for Nigeria and was part of the team that went to the 2019 Nations Cup, winning the bronze medal.

2. William Troost-Ekong

The Udinese defender who was born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father, and a Dutch mother. He made 1 appearance for the Dutch U-19 team and 2 appearances for the U-20 team, before switching his allegiance to the green and white of Nigeria.

During his time with Nigeria, he featured at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, winning a bronze medal, and was also part of the team that finished third at the 2019 AFCON.

3. Peter Osaze Odemwingie

Odemwingie was born to a Nigerian father and a Russian Tatar mother. He is a former international, playing for Nigeria, as well as playing in other countries, club wise. He played in Nigeria, France, England, and Indonesia.

He played for Nigeria at the 2008 Olympics, winning silver, and also played the 2014 world cup.

4. Maduka Okoye

A new addition to the Super Eagles set up, the goalkeeper who currently plays for Fortuna Dusseldorf has become a face that has probably come to stay under the coach, Gernot Rohr. Born to a Nigerian father, and German mother, he has become a favourite of the coach.

His huge intimidating height and frame support his very imposing figure and ability. He made his debut for Nigeria in 2019.

5. Carl Ikeme

The goalkeeper started his career in England and was born and raised in England before opting to play for Nigeria.

He played all career for Wolverhampton Wanderers and was a huge part of the Wolves team that won the Championship in 2009 and League One in 2014, and he made one Premier League appearance in 2012.

6. Cyriel Dessers

After pledging his allegiance to Nigeria, Belgium born striker, Cyriel Dessers finally got a call up to the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Born to a Belgian father and a Nigerian mother, he is yet to feature for Nigeria under Gernot Rohr.

He currently has left Dutch side Heracles where he was both the club and the league’s top scorer. He scored 18 goals so far for Heracles and 15 goals in the league.

More importantly, he scored the winner in a game for Heracles as the caused an upset against title favorites, Ajax. He has now joined the Belgian First Division outfit K.R.C Genk where he teamed up with another Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu.

7. Tyrone Ebuehi

Ebuehi was born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father and a Dutch mother. Ebuehi made his debut for Nigeria under coach Gernot Rohr and played for Nigeria at the 2014 world cup. However, a long term injury has seen him lose out on his spot in the national team.

8. Abbey George

He started his career with Sharks, in 1999. He then moved to England to play for Macclesfield Town. After five years at Town, he signed with Port Vale in December 2004.

He made almost 18 appearances for the Super Eagles during his time.

9. Reuben Agboola

Agboola is a former footballer who played at left-back during his career. He made over 268 league appearances in a 13-year career for big clubs such as Southampton, Sunderland, Charlton Athletic, and Swansea City.

He also made nine appearances for Nigeria between 1991 and 1993, appearing at the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations.

10. Noah Sarenren Bazee

A right-back by trade, Noah currently plays for the German side, FC Augsburg. His inclusion into the Suoer Eagles would be a welcome development as Nigeria currently doesn’t have a proper right-back who can hold the forte, complimenting Jamilu Collins at left-back.
